Why it's cool to stay in an architect-designed modern holiday home

Want to enjoy your staycation appreciating modern architecture in an exceptional setting? Living Architecture offers an alternative to the traditional country cottage, farmhouse or manor, with its collection of exciting and immersive architect-designed holiday homes.

Living Architecture was a trailblazer when it launched in 2006. Bringing a modernist perspective to holiday rentals, they commissioned seven distinct properties* across the UK created by some of the most relevant architects and artists working today. The purpose remains to promote, educate and influence discussion around modern architecture.

Here are two outstanding properties you could choose to stay in over the summer. In Devon and Wales, the unique accommodation is set in remote and peaceful locations, whilst having extra appeal to modern architecture enthusiasts and those wanting to experience a modern-designed home.

Secular Retreat: A hidden gem with sweeping countryside views (sleeps 10)

Located in South Devon, Secular Retreat (2018) is Living Architecture’s most recent commission, completing the visionary series. It is the only private house designed by world famous Pritzker Prize-winning Swiss architect Peter Zumthor in the UK, providing a rare opportunity to stay in this extraordinary hilltop house which enjoys magnificent views of the countryside. The house sits in the place of a ruined timber house constructed in the 1940s and links to the original site remain, such as a small hexagonal shaped walled area made out of layers of concrete block, as well as the 20-metre-tall Monterey Pine trees.

Highlights:

  • The first permanent building by renowned Swiss architect Peter Zumthor in the UK
  • Interiors, including furniture and lighting designed by the architect specifically for this house
  • Private hilltop location with expansive gardens and views across Devon and to the sea
  • Within a short stroll to some of the finest coastal walks in the South West
  • Farm shops and fishmongers selling locally caught and produced food
  • Five bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms

Price: From £600 per night (based on a 7-night week stay)
