Broughton Sanctuary - one of the coolest places to go in 2024

Broughton Sanctuary in the Yorkshire Dales has been named one of the 30 most exciting destinations to visit next year. It’s one of five UK hot spots featured in the National Geographic Cool List 2024 which covers landmark hotel openings, ambitious rewilding projects, new train routes, and more.

Located within 3,000 acres of beautiful historic parkland in the stunning Yorkshire countryside, Broughton Sanctuary is home to one of the UK’s leading nature recovery projects. Working in partnership with the White Rose Forest, they have planted over 350,000 trees in the last three years.

In its Cool List, National Geographic Traveller commends Broughton Sanctuary for its rewilding initiatives: “Intensive sheep grazing is being reduced, peat bogs and waterways are being restored and tens of thousands of newly planted saplings will boost tree cover from 6% to over 20%. All this is intended to help boost the area’s biodiversity, which already includes otters, hares and kestrels. The project is a natural move for Broughton, which already offers experiences such as foraging tours, woodland dining and even moon bathing on its grounds.”

Custodian of Broughton Sanctuary, Roger Tempest, said, “We are incredibly proud to be recognised by National Geographic Traveller in their 2024 Cool List. We have already reached over 30% tree cover which has had a positive impact on biodiversity. Our work is dedicated to encouraging the reconnection of our ‘inner’ and ‘outer’ nature, both through the rewilding work and also through the wellbeing programmes and retreats at Avalon Wellbeing Centre. We are on a mission to heal ourselves and our world".

Guests can stay in one of 19 recently refurbished homes, or within Broughton Hall itself on exclusive hire. A walled garden bistro, ‘Utopia’ serves plant-based delights, and in-house chefs in the historic house can create to any requirement.

Rates start at £173 per night based on a 3-night stay at Ivy Cottage (2 guests). Guests can experience the Sanctuary’s nature recovery projects firsthand through the new Lens on Nature programme, which costs £150. 20% of all bookings are reinvested in Broughton Sanctuary's nature recovery programme.
